A New Instrument: Not Just an Idea
The creation of a new musical instrument, it is not an easy task. It starts with an idea which is then developed and tested. But what is most important is, it is in order to investigate whether or not the tool that you have in mind, you actually have something unique to add to the world of music. That is why it is crucial for amateur, semi-professional, and professional musicians, to refer to it. You will attract to you are my courage, and are looking for contact us. So, Ward and I went on a visit to Glenn Engelen.
The Story of Glenn Engelen
One of the first people I showed my creation to was Glenn Engelen, a teacher at the music academy in Ekeren. He teaches percussion and drums. As a freelance musician, he regularly replaces classical orchestras and pop singers. In his own band, Motörboot - Pretpunk from the Belgian Kempen, he plays with great energy and dedication.
When we met, Glenn was a bit absent-minded, but he immediately welcomed us in a friendly manner. He took all the time to look at, feel and test our instrument. To our pleasant surprise, he was enthusiastic about the Cahang and immediately saw the many possibilities for different types of bands. However, he mainly saw potential for the instrument in folk music.
Glenn was particularly impressed by the practical aspects of the prototype we had with us. The fact that it is a light instrument that you can hang up and with which you can move freely appealed to him. Of course, the sound quality was also of great importance.
Ward and I were pleasantly surprised by the positive feedback that Glenn gave us on our preliminary creation.
