A New Instrument: Not Just an Idea
Developing a new musical instrument is anything but easy. It starts with a simple idea, but that idea has to be developed and tested. Crucial to this is to investigate whether the instrument you have in mind can actually add something new and unique to the musical world. This is why it is important to consult musicians of different levels: amateur, semi-professional and professional. Their honest feedback is an essential building block. But during such a creative process, you inevitably encounter challenges for which you need specialised knowledge. That led us to Vera Rocha, who gave our journey a valuable twist.
The Story of Vera Rocha
Building a suspended percussion instrument was an achievement in itself. But the challenge did not end there. How do you design a harness or belt that is not only practical and comfortable, but also aesthetically appealing? I ventured into some DIY experiments, but frankly they were far from pretty. They functioned, but did not convince. Fortunately, we got the tip via via to contact Vera Rocha.
Vera came to our home the first time and made an immediate impression. Her creative energy and impressive knowledge of fabrics and belts gave us immediate confidence. Every meeting thereafter took place in her studio, a place where we were always warmly welcomed. The hours seemed to fly by there. Her broad smile and effervescent approach made every moment unforgettable. But the most valuable thing about this collaboration was the constant feeling of progress: step by step we came closer to the perfect design.

Vera, a professional designer with experience in backpack design, climbing equipment and other specialised applications, immediately saw potential in our project. For her, this was a new challenge, a chance to apply her expertise in a different way. It wasn't long before we got to test her first prototype. My son Ward, musician and my faithful companion in this adventure, was the first to try it out. Together with Vera, he discussed every detail, from functionality to aesthetics. This collaboration constantly led to improvements and new ideas.
The ultimate belt
After months of testing and refining, we finally reached the end result: the ultimate belt for the Cahang. Vera's design offered stability, comfort and ensured that the instrument remained firmly in place, even with movement. This was a breakthrough for musicians who want to use the Cahang both walking and on stage. Thanks to this belt, they can fully focus on their music, unhampered by technical inconveniences.
A collaboration with a future
Working with Vera Rocha was an inspiring experience we will not soon forget. Her professionalism and enthusiasm played a key role in the success of this project. We look forward to future collaborations and look forward to what is yet to come. This feels like the beginning of a long-term, fruitful relationship full of innovation and creativity!
