A New Instrument: Not Just an Idea
Creating a new musical instrument is not an easy task. It often starts with an idea that is then developed and tested. What is especially important is to investigate whether the instrument you have in mind actually adds something unique to the musical world. That is why it is crucial to consult professional musicians. You take the plunge and make contact.
The Story of Danique Kos
Searching for percussionists was something I had not really done before, and I wanted someone with international experience. Would I be able to get hold of such a person? And yes, I did, very quickly. That is how I came into contact with Danique Kos, a 26-year-old international percussion artist. This young lady shares her opinion without reservation, and that is exactly what you need to further develop your idea.
We had to go to the Netherlands to meet Danique Kos, where she also teaches percussion at Jeroen Molenaar’s drum school in Hilversum. It became a conversation of about an hour.
Danique Kos (born in 1998) discovered her passion for percussion at a young age and has since impressively developed her musical talents as a percussionist, drummer and MC. She shines on international stages and works with renowned agencies and well-known names in the music industry. Danique is currently the central figure in Marc Forno’s enchanting dinner show ‘Grandeur’ and has a permanent place in the largest club in Amsterdam, “Club Escape.” Her career is growing, and she leaves an unforgettable impression at every performance. As a proud endorser of Vater, Roland and Pearl Percussion, Danique not only represents her dedication to her profession, but also her pursuit of musical perfection.
We were kindly welcomed by Danique and as a true Dutchwoman she got straight to the point of our appointment. Of course she immediately wanted to test the instrument we had with us. It was noticeable that we were dealing with a real pro here. The fingers rattled over the instrument and we heard sounds and rhythms that we had never heard before. After testing the prototype, she immediately gave her opinion without any reservations. I can tell you that a lot of improvements were needed before she would even consider buying such an instrument. All the other hanging cajons she had ever tested were not really something she believed in. But with our instrument, she was very pleasantly surprised by our idea, and believed that if we would work on this further, we would really have something in our hands. That is why she brought in Jeroen Molenaar, who was teaching, and his student, to also assess our instrument. It was an instructive hour, during which we received a lot of input to work with.
Danique’s Influence
Danique found our concept interesting and absolutely wanted to stay informed. Her comments had the greatest influence on the final form of the instrument: the Cahang.
The Cahang is now a reality, partly thanks to Danique’s honest feedback. It proves that collaboration with professionals is crucial when creating something new in the music world.
